Graduated in Computer Science by the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and the University of Leeds, England, Sofia de Castro began her singing studies in Juventude Musical Portuguesa in 1992. She finished in 2004 her singing course at the Music School of National Conservatorium in Lisbon, in the class of José Manuel Araújo. She carried out several technique and vocal interpretation master classes with a number of teachers, among them the Internationale Sommerakademie of the Mozarteum University at Salzburg, Austria , in Rudolph Knoll's class and a master class with Sarah Walker in Lisbon. Sofia has classes with the Italian professors Enza Ferrari (repertoire) and Nicola Giusti (singing technique) on a regular basis.
Since 1994 until now Sofia de Castro represented the following roles and shows: "Fernanda", in "Dia de Festa"'s operetta, of Manuel Gírio and Maestro Redes Cruz - 1994; "The West End Show", in the University of Leeds, England - 1995; Belinda, from the Purcell's opera "Dido and Eneas", with Conservatorium Opera Studio - 2001; Papaguena, from the Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute", with Conservatorium Opera Studio (Portuguese version) - 2002; Soloist in Beethoven's "Choral Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra op. 80", with the Orchestra of Algarve, under the direction of maestro Cesário Costa - 2002; "No Gabinete do Dr. Caligari", with Conservatorium Opera Studio, where she sang excerpts of several operas, among them Mozart's "Così Fan Tutte", in the role of Despina - 2003; Soloist in Horovitz' "Summer Sunday", under the direction of Gabriela Canavilhas - 2003; Flamínia, from Avondano's opera "Il Mondo della Luna", in the first modern audition of this opera - 2004; "Histoires des Fauves", with Conservatorium Opera Studio, where she sang pieces from Ravel's "Histoires Naturelles", Caplet e Ned Rorem's "Fables" - 2005; Squirrel, from Nino Rotta's opera "Lo Scoiattolo in Gamba" (Portuguese version), in an Artemrede production in cooperation with Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and S. Carlos National Theatre, in Almeirim and Torres Novas Theatres - 2005.
During the 2003/2004 season, she joined the S. Carlos National Theatre Choir, with which she interpreted, among other repertoire, Puccini's "Turandot" and Beethoven's "Solemn Mass". With Companhia Portuguesa de Ópera Choir, Sofia interpreted Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore". She sings on a regular basis in opera, musicals and Celtic music concerts. She performed in places like the Salão Nobre of National Conservatorium, Quinta da Regaleira, Trindade Theatre, Winter Garden of S. Luiz Municipal Theatre, Espaço 7 às 9 of Belém's Cultural Centre, Carriages Museum, the Cascais Cultural Centre and Campo Pequeno, among many others.
Since 2002 Sofia performs every year at the "Música nos Claustros" and "Musicando" concerts cycle, organized by Eborae Musica, with concerts in many locations throughout Alentejo. In 2004 Sofia sang in a Christmas concert in the Portuguese Cultural Centre at Portugal's Embassy in Bissau, Guinea, by invitation from Instituto Camões, with the guitar player Silvestre Fonseca, with whom she still performs on a regular basis.
In 2006 she performed in the show "Campo Pequeno outra vez em Grande" of Filipe la Féria, as an opera singer, with live transmition by RTP1 and in an opera show based on Mozart's "Don Giovanni", performed in Lux. In 2007 Sofia sang the choir of a Haendel's "Messiah" production in Igreja de Arroios, performed in Filipe La Féria's show "Gala 7 Maravilhas", with live transmition by TVI and participated in several concerts with the Symphonic Band of PSP (National Police Corp). She worked with several directors, among them José Manuel Araújo, José Manuel Brandão, Armando Vidal, Gabriela Canavilhas, Cesário Costa, João Paulo Santos, Jorge Listopad and Érica Mandillo.
