José Manuel Araújo

José Manuel Araújo attended the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, where he studied Classic Philology, and the National Conservatory, where he studied Piano, Cello, Composition, Harpsichord, Clavichord, Ancient Music and Singing Interpretation, finishing the latter course with the maximum grade. He graduated in Singing, in the Lisbon College of Music.

He studied with José de Oliveira Lopes, Lola Aragón , Gino Bechi, Ettore Campogallianni, Claude Thiolass, Marimi del Pozo, and, in the Accademia Verdiana in Busseto, with Carlo Bergonzi.

He was a soloist singer in the National Theatre of S. Carlos. He sang the parts of Camille ("The Merry Widow"), Pollione ("Norma"), Uldino ("Attila"), Ismaele ("Nabucco"), Jim Mahoney ("Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagónny"), Steuermann ("Der Fliegende Holländer"), Léon ("La Mère Coupable"), O Conde ("O Amor Industrioso"), O Fidalgo ("Triologia das Barcas"), Lo Studente ("Manon Lescaut"), Wagner ("Mefistofele"), Helenus ("Les Troyens"), Moser ("Die Meistersinger"), Tamino ("Die Zauberflöte"), Alfredo, Gaston ("La Traviata"), Conte Almaviva ("Il Barbiere di Siviglia"), D. José ("Carmen"), Duca ("Rigoletto"), Bedel Bamford ("Sweeney Todd"), Jasão ("Os Encantos de Medeia"), Dr. S. (2The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat"), Cavaradossi (2Tosca"), Altoum ("Turandot"), Manrico ("Il Trovatore"), D. Ottavio ("D. Giovanni").

From the concert repertoire, he sang the Beethoven's IX Symphony, Mozart's "Coronation Mass" and "Requiem", Rossini's "Stabat Mater" and "Petite Messe Solennelle", Falla's "El Retablo de Maese Pedro", Verdi's "Requiem", Haydn's "Die Schöpfung", Saint-Saën's "L'Oratorio de Noël", Cimarosa's "Stabat Mater".

He sang with the conductors: John Neschling, Wolfgang Rennert, Daniel Nazareth, Armando Gatto, Franco Ferraris, Lathan Köenig, Frédéric Chaslin, Gregor Bühl, Dimitri Kitaenko, Silva Pereira, João Paulo Santos, Manuel Ivo Cruz, Gunther Arglebe, Ferreira Lobo, Rafael Montes, Ino Turturo, Cristopher Bochmann, Leonardo de Barros, Michael Nyman, Fernando Fontes, Laszlo Heltay, Tadeusz Serafin, Roberto Perez, Renato Palumbo, Rengim Gökmen, Gabor Ötvös, Zoltán Peszko, Zsolt Hamar, Félix Carrasco, Giuseppe Lanzetta, Osvaldo Ferreira.

He sang with the Orchestra of the Teatro Nacional de S. Carlos, the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Beijing Orchestra, the Youth Symphonic Orchestra, the RDP Orchestra, the Orchestra of the North, the Vallès Symphonic Orchestra, the Angrense Orchestra, the Madeira Classical Orchestra, the Póvoa do Varzim Orchestra.

He teaches at the National Conservatory of Music and at the Academia de Amadores de Música.
