Born in Oporto of Spanish mother, Jorge Chaminé is a fervent European. He studied with Lola Rodríguez de Aragón, Hans Hotter, Daniel Ferro and Teresa Berganza. Equally at home in opera, operetta, zarzuela, oratorio, new music or art-song repertory, he also holds pedagogical and artistic responsibilities and is deeply involved in humanitarian organizations.
His international career has brought him to the world's most prestigious stages and concert halls, making him one of today's most innovative and sought-after soloists. JC sung with today's foremost conductors as Seiji Ozawa (with whom he made his New York "début" at Carnegie Hall), Yehudi Menuhin (prize-winner of his Foundation he often sang with him), Claudio Scimone, Michel Corboz, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Placido Domingo., and with famous orchestras such as the Boston Symphony, London Symphony, Czech Philharmonic, Berlin, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Ensemble Intercontemporain.
One of the pre-eminent recitalists of his generation, Chaminé has conceived and performed thoughtfully-constructed and original programs which explore the rich diversity of song idioms, styles and languages (he knows French, German, Italian, Russian, English and of course Spanish and Portuguese). Being a passionate performer (not only a "classical" one) he also loves singing Tangos, Fados, Cole Porter's melodies, Hebrew liturgy, gipsy songs as well as Boleros and Bossa Nova. He has given the first performance of works, some of which especially written for him, by S. Bussotti, J. Lenot, A. Markeas, A. Petit, J. Schwarz, Roman Vlad, György Kurtag, Maurice Ohana, Luis de Pablo and Iannis Xenakis. Medal of Human Rights from the UNESCO in recognition for his work for Children, JC has just been in May 2005 nominated Music Ambassador of Music in ME (Music in Middle East). "That night the great Portuguese artist, made one of the most extraordinary performances that the old music lover which I am, ever attended" (Jean Lacouture). He is the president and artistic director of the prestigious italian Festival CIMA (Tuscany).
