João Merino

Born in Penafiel, João Merino is currently on his final year at the School of Arts of the Performance (ESMAE) in Oporto, under the tuition of Professor José de Oliveira Lopes.

He has participated in numerous master classes with singing teachers in Portugal and Europe. Recently, he was awarded a scholarship to further his operatic studies with Francisco Lázaro in Barcelona.

In opera, he has played the following roles: Figaro in "The Marriage of Figaro"; The title role in Mozart's "D.Giovanni"; D. Giovanni in "Fiore Nudo" (based in Mozart's "D.Giovanni" - a production of the National Theatre of S. João in Oporto); Fiorelo in Rossini's "Barbieri di Siviglia"; Petrurci in Donizetti's "Lucrezia Borgia" (a production of Teatro Real de Madrid, directed by Emilio Saggi); Re and Buschaiollo in Respighi's "La Bela Dormente nel Bosco"; Morales in Bizet's "Carmen"; Grenvil and Douphol in "La Traviata" by Verdi; Sacrestano in Puccini's "Tosca"; Peter in "Hansel und Gretel" by Humperdinck; Emperor in Stravinsky's "Le Rousignol"; Le ami in Milhaud's "Le Pauvre Matelot" (a production of Gulbenkian Foundation Lisbon) and, recently, "Maria de Buenos Aires" by Astor Piazzolla at the Teatro Carlos Alberto of Oporto.

João is also experienced at the concert plarform. He has performed: "Stabat Mater" by Rodrigues Esteves; Vivaldi's "Gloria"; Tellemann's "Mass in G" and "Mass in C"; Handel's "Messiah"; Bach's "Magnificat" and "Mass in G minor"; Haydn's "Creation"; the entire set of Mozart's "Missa brevis" and "Requiem"; Shubert's "Mass in G major"; Beethoven's "Choral Fantasy" and 9th Sinfony; Fauré's Requiem, "Don Quichotte à Dulcinée" and "Cinque Chansons Populaires Greques" by Ravel, "Kindertotenlieder" and "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen" by Mahler; Poulenc's "Le Bestiaire" and "Chichester Psalms" by Leonard Bernstein.

As a soloist, João has been conducted by Antonio Saiote, Filipe Veríssimo, Florian Totan, Gunther Argelhebe, Howard Dyck, Ivo Cruz, Jean-Marc Burfin, João Paulo Santos, José Ferreira Lobo, José Luís Borges Coelho, Miguel Ortega, Roberto Perez, Rui Massena, Omri Hadari e Walter Hidalgo; and directed by Carlos Avilez, Emílio Saggi, João Henriques, João Paes, Jorge Rodrigues, Norma Graça-Silvestre, Nuno M Cardoso, Paulo Matos and Tim Coleman.

João sings regularly with the ensemble "Música Nova" with whom he has performed several world premières of contemporary works.
