Ensemble Vocal A Sei Voci

www.aseivoci.com

Ensemble Vocal A Sei Voci.

www.lavenexiana.net

La Venexiana Madrigal Group. The name LA VENEXIANA is taken from an anonymous renaissance comedy, one of the cardinal points of reference in Italian renaissance theater both for its use of language, a combination of Italian and dialect, and for its acute rendering of a society and manners. It was, in fact, a precursor of the commedia dell'arte. In styling itself after this glorious tradition, LA VENEXIANA aims to incorporate into its musical interpretation the theatrically, attention to language in all of its subtlety, and exultation of contrasts between refined and popular, sacred and profane, that characterize our culture today.

Master Chorale of Washington

Master Chorale of Washington. Founded in 1967 by the late Paul Hill, The Master Chorale of Washington was featured in the inaugural concert of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 1971 and has been performing in the Concert Hall ever since on an average of eight to ten times annually in its own subscription series and as a guest chorus for other arts organizations. In 1969, National Symphony Orchestra conductor Howard Mitchell was suddenly confronted with a problem-the organization that was contracted to be the featured chorus in an upcoming NSO concert was no longer available-so he called upon Paul Hill for help. In a matter of two short weeks, Hill recruited 44 new singers to expand a small, informal singing group of 36 with whom he had been rehearsing "...for fun, with no real plans of performing" and prepared them to perform Beethoven's demanding Fidelio with the NSO. That was the beginning of what was then called the Paul Hill Chorale and today is known as the Master Chorale of Washington.

Musica Fiorita. The contrast between the religious and the secular music of the late Renaissance and the early baroque era is the basis of the programs of the ensemble MUSICA FIORITA. Special emphasis is put on the juxtaposition of vocal and instrumental music. "If we play French and Italian music in the same concert, it occurs regularly that we all arrive with several instruments. The sound of my Italian harpsichord is direct, present, and even a little explosive, the French one on the other hand has more overtones and sounds a little perfumed. San Francisco Bach Choir

www.sfbach.org

San Francisco Bach Choir. The San Francisco Bach Choir has been an important part of the Bay Area's cultural life for the past six decades. The oldest continuing community choir in the western United States, SFBC played a major role in establishing choral music as a serious art form in Northern California while introducing thousands to the great works of J. S. Bach. The choir has performed most of the major works of choral literature, including J. S. Bach masterpieces such as the Mass in b minor, the St. John Passion, the St. Matthew Passion, the Motets and numerous cantatas. It has also performed many works in the early antiphonal style, as wells as premiering compositions written specifically for the choir by director David Babbitt. The San Francisco Bach Choir draws from its roughly eighty-member roster to perform works using a variety of choir sizes and parts. Our repertoire often draws upon the use of multiple choirs, arranged in antiphonal formation throughout a venue. The chamber chorus Concentus, formed from members of our main choir, performs many pieces requiring a smaller ensemble of singers. (...)

The Hilliard Ensemble

www.hilliardensemble.demon.co.uk

The Hilliard Ensemble. The Hilliard Ensemble is one of the world's finest vocal chamber groups, and is probably unrivalled for its formidable reputation in the fields of both early and new music. Its distinctive style and highly developed musicianship engage the listener as much in medieval and renaissance repertoire as in works specially written for the group by living composers. The ensemble's performing schedule is busy and varied, amounting to some hundred concerts a year. Its substantial following in Europe, particularly in Mediterranean and central European countries, is augmented by regular visits to Japan, the USA and Canada.

The group's reputation as an early music ensemble dates from the 1980s and its series of highly successful records for EMI (many of which are now re-released on Virgin), but from the start the group has paid equal attention to new music. Their 1988 recording of Arvo Pärt's Passio began a fruitful relationship with both Pärt and the Munich-based record company ECM. This continued with their recording of Arvo Pärt's Litany, which was released in August '96. The group has recently commissioned other composers from the Baltic States, including Veljo Tormis and Erkki-Sven Tüür, adding to a rich repertoire of new music written for the Ensemble by Gavin Bryars, Heinz Holliger, John Casken, James MacMillan, Elena Firsova and others. The group's 1994 composition competition produced over one hundred pieces, many of which have found their way into Hilliard programmes. At its annual summer schools the group provides for a composer-in-residence; past holders of this post have included Ivan Moody, Piers Hellawell, Barry Guy and Gavin Bryars. Many of these composers are represented on the ECM double album A Hilliard Songbook. (...)

The Sixteen

The Sixteen. After twenty-seven years of world-wide performance and recording, The Sixteen is recognised as one of the world's greatest vocal ensembles. Its special reputation for performing early English polyphony, masterpieces of the Renaissance and a diversity of 20th century music is drawn from the passions of conductor and founder, Harry Christophers. Over ninety recordings reflect The Sixteen's quality in a range of work spanning the music of five hundred years, winning many awards including Grand Prix du Disque for Handel's Messiah, numerous Schallplattenkritik, the coveted Gramophone Award for Early Music, and most recently the prestigious Classical Brit Award 2005 for 'Renaissance'.

The Sixteen tours throughout Europe, Japan, Australia and the Americas and has given regular performances at major concert halls and festivals worldwide, including the Barbican Centre, Sydney Opera House, and Vienna Musikverein; also the BBC Proms, and the festivals of Salzburg, Granada, Lucerne and Istanbul. The vigour and passion of its performance win new fans wherever it performs.  At home in the UK, the group promotes A Choral Pilgrimage, a tour of our finest cathedrals bringing music back to the buildings for which it was written.  In 2006 The Choral Pilgrimage features the Requiem of 1605 by Tomás Luis de Victoria. An ongoing association with the BBC Philharmonic allows the choir to stretch its repertoire into large-scale choral works of the 20th century.  The Sixteen are "The Voices of Classic FM" and from the 2006/7 season will become Associate Ensemble at the South Bank Centre, London.
